Ricardo Hernandez enjoys time with the '00 ODP International Team

Ricardo Hernandez, who plays with the Florida Fire Juniors 99/00 Boys Premier team was recently selected by his Region III ODP coaches to participate with the 00 ODP International Team on tour scheduled this past February 19th through February 26th to San Jose, Costa Rica.

"I had a great time in Costa Rica and I learned a lot not only about the game but about life as well. They took us to a daycare and everyone got a lot out of it. I  will remember the experience for a long time." Hernandez said. Regarding the competition and his team, Hernandez said, "The level of competition was high and we were on their level and even higher in the games. The best team was Alajuela (CR). We learned from them and tied 1-1. The Costa Rica style of play was high but not very physical . They wanted to keep the ball and were good when they did. But when they didn't have the ball they had difficulties defending and some teams were easy to score against. Overall the region team won 3 and tied 1 out of 4".

Asked how Florida Fire Juniors has helped shape him as a player, Hernandez said "My favorite part of Florida Fire is the environment and chemistry that they create. The chemistry that my team has helps me throughout ODP to be able to play with new players. I also like the traveling and getting to know new places. I hope one day to have the opportunity to play for the Academy in Chicago which would be a great experience for me."  Hernandez went on to praise a few others for helping him get to this point, "I would like to thank my current coach (Luke Voyce) and my past competitive coaches. The pros and watching their games is also a big help to my soccer abilities. Most importantly, my parents are my biggest influence and help me with anything I need soccer – wise."

The ODP Int'l team played against top International Youth programs on tour while also attending a professional match.
